What do the numbers on the microscope dial represent?

The Dino-Lite microscope employs a state-of-the-art design lens system that is operated by rotating a dial to adjust the magnification. The magnification range displayed on this dial might in some cases differ from the value listed on the product specification. This FAQ explains the specified magnification range and the purpose of the magnification indicators on the dial.

Magnification specification

The magnification range specified represents the actual capability of the device. It may be listed on the specifications in one of several formats:

Specification Meaning
10x – 50x, 220x These models have two usable magnification options; the range between 10x – 50x, and then again by continued focus at approximately 220x
20x – 220x These models can focus all the way through 20x - 220x
5x – 140x These models can focus all the way through 5x – 140x
400x – 470x These models can focus all the way through 400x – 470x
500x – 550x These models can focus all the way through 500x – 550x
700x – 900x These models can focus all the way through 700x – 900x (and not below 700x).

Magnification dial markers

Every Dino-Lite microscope has a dial on the side of the device which can be rotated to adjust the magnification level. On most models, an arrow next to the dial points to the current magnification value. The values shown on the dial are provided as reference for some of the more commonly used magnification settings. Please note that in some cases the maximum and minimum values shown on the dial are not the absolute maximum and minimum capability of the device. For example, on some models the lowest reference value provided is 20x, but 10x magnification can still be reached by continuing to rotate the dial beyond the 20x marker.

If you are comparing the capability of a Dino-Lite to a traditional stereo or compound microscope, it may be more useful to compare the field of view rather than the magnification.
